What is Folklore?

“...folklore is not produced by the simple act of creation of a story, song, or saying. It is produced rather by a complex, collective process in which many minds and mouths must collaborate”

- Arlt & Taylor, “A Platform,” 4, California Folklore Quarterly 1, no. 1 (1942): 3–6.

Western States Folklore Society (formerly California Folklore Society), was founded in 1941. Learn more about the organization's history!
Anyone with an interest in the study of folklore can become a member of Western States Folklore Society. Check out the membership page for a list of benefits when joining our community.
The Society holds an Annual Meeting every April in one of the Western United States. This event brings together folklorists of all kinds to connect, present research and projects, and discuss issues facing the study of folklore today.
Western Folklore welcomes article and review submissions from all fields as long as they deal substantively with the study of folklore. These submissions are peer-reviewed and may be published quarterly in the Western Folklore journal.
